Our history

Since 1983, Tierra has been developing technical clothing for people who venture beyond the ordinary. Born out of curiosity, innovation, and respect for nature, we continue to create durable products that perform – in any weather, season, or altitude.

In the early 1980s, the outdoor world was on the verge of change. New materials and technologies began to challenge old truths: suddenly, it was possible to design garments that offered weather protection without sacrificing breathability. During a trip to the United States, Anders Andersson discovered Gore-Tex – a material that only a few years earlier had been used in NASA’s space suits. It was then that the idea for Tierra was born: the belief that the right materials and construction could make it possible to stay comfortable in demanding environments and bad weather.

Early on, Tierra explored several directions; at one point even developing golf apparel, before finding its true focus. After outfitting the first successful all-Swedish expedition to Mount Everest in 1991, the company turned its attention toward developing technical garments for mountain environments and demanding conditions. The experience from the expedition shaped how we work: close to the user, with respect for the mountains, and with an uncompromising approach to quality.

Tierra began as a mail-order company, offering technical products directly to customers – a direct-to-consumer model long before it became a trend. Later, Tierra stores in Stockholm and Gothenburg became meeting places for a growing community of climbers and outdoor enthusiasts. Known for high-quality, technically advanced garments at fair prices, Tierra built an early reputation based on performance rather than image: a philosophy that still guides us today.

Four decades later, we still work closely with Gore, develop garments tested in real-world conditions, and collaborate with a dedicated team of internationally certified mountain guides and alpine rescue professionals, whose experience directly shapes how we design and test our products. For us, sustainability is as much about enduring performance as it is about environmental responsibility – products made to last, to be repaired, and to maintain their function when it matters most.

Today, Tierra is focused on life above the treeline – yet most of our garments perform just as well far below it. Our ambition remains the same as in 1983: to create garments that make a difference when conditions demand it. After more than forty years, we’ve learned that true innovation takes time – and that the mountains always have the final say.

"Four decades of learning have taught us one thing: the mountains always have the final say."
